Welcome to
RedClay Cafe
Opening its doors in April 2022, RedClay Café derives its name from the rich Hogsback local Xhosa tradition of **Qabimbola / Qab’imbola / Qaba Imbola**, signifying the practice of applying red clay to the face.
Qaba: Smear | Imbola: Red ochre / red clay earth pigment
The same red clay is also used to make the clay figurines you’re likely to encounter from our local hog & stick sellers. Among these, the hog figurine reigns as a crowd favorite. If fortune favours you, you may stumble upon a diverse array of figurines, each exquisitely shaped from this very clay. These enchanting figures include dragons, horses, tortoises, kudus & traditional huts.
However, it’s essential to note that these clay creations are not fashioned from conventional potter’s clay nor subjected to the kiln’s heat. Therefore, their durability is limited. Rather than viewing your acquisition as a long-lasting artifact, consider it a noble act of **supporting underprivileged families and nourishing hungry children** in this disadvantaged region. Your contribution truly makes a difference!
We hope you enjoy your time with us!
